asynchronous: not real-time

chat: real-time, informal conversation between computer users

computer-mediated communication: any communication between people which is made possible by computer technology ie. chat

discussion board: a.k.a. message board. An organized, on-line interactive forum where students, instructors and guest speakers have asynchronous discussions by posting questions, comments and responses

distance education: any learning situation where students are physically separated from their instructor.

e-mail: electronic mail sent from one computer user to another

experience. Objectives have three components: the learners performance, the conditions under which it will be exhibited and the criteria the learner must meet.

facilitator: a person who moderates on-line discussions

hot list: a collection of internet site addresses or URLs that are organized around a topic or a learning activity

interactive learning: educational experiences where the learners participate in the event by asking questions, working on a project together. In this context, students are active rather than passive learners

internet search: using an internet search engine (Yahoo, Lycos, etc) to find internet sites revelant to a search topic.

link: an eletronic connection between one internet location and another, enabling users to click on hot text, a graphic or an icon to go from one site-- or place within a site--to the other.

LISTSERV: an electronic mailing and distribution list

multimedia scrapbook: an internet-based learning activity where students search the internet, make a multimedia hotlist, then create a presentation using audio, graphic, text or video files downloaded from the internet.

objectives: these simple but critical statements describe what students will be able to do as the result of an educational experience

passive learning: learning events where the student is a passive recepient of data

subject sampler: a learner-centered, internet-based learning activity. The instructor provides a hot list of less than 10 internet sites that are organized around a given topic. Then students are asked to explore the sites, and report back on their perspectives, thoughts and feelings about the topic.

synchronous communication: real-time communication

treasure hunt: an internet-based learning activity designed to teach students facts about a given subject. The instructor gives students a hot list of 10-to-15 internet sites
