Database Example Using edwebiii server at SDSU

With FileMakerPro and Tango, you can create databases that the user can add to and view on the web, and that you can process.

Following are procedures that were current as of April 1997 for use by SDSU students in the ED TEC department. These are the procedures that I used to create my Tango file. Be sure to work with the IML Director, Gregg Koyamatsu, for access to the server and to have up-to-date information.

Find out from Gregg which Tango manuals are current and read them.
Create a test file with Claris FileMakerPro. I created one for name, email, phone number, etc. Gregg said that the headers do not matter in Tango.
Gregg set me up for my first phase, putting my FileMakerPro file on the web so that my users can input and add to my database. (My next phase will be to make all of the data readable to my users, and to process the data, such as alphabetizing it.)
On the edwebiii server, Gregg had me enter a user name as first name and last initial, and a password. He then created files and folders with my name and for the class, EdTec653.
Tango was available only on computer #IML20. From this machine, select "Chooser" and "AppleShare"/EdWebiiiHD. Enter your user name and password. [Be sure not to "x" the box ... or you will permanently lose your server privileges.]
Open edwebiii/Tango. Put your database file into FileMaker folder. [It is important that you do not use Tango or FMP from the server because this will slow everyone down!] Tango goes into the EdTec653 folder. Tango will create the file that I name + ".qry" for a query file which is both for search and a database.
Gregg opened my db on edwebiii and said that it will always be open unless someone closes it. If that happens, just tell the staff and they will reopen it. [Note: this happened several times in a few weeks.]

In Tango, create a query document and drop it into 653. Type the specifications - "edwebiii.sdsu.edu/tango/edtec653/{filename}.qry?function=form".
Put this specification into your HTML file to link to your file on the edwebiii server.
